Back in the olden days
we didn’t have color TV, cell phones,
or video games.
We’d never heard of remote controls, DVRs,
or microwaves.
We didn’t surf the net, use credit cards,
or take snapshots with our phones.
Back in the olden days
we didn’t have Little League, fast food service,
or mowers that we rode.
We had no mail without stamps, no logos on shirts,
and no air conditioning except a fan.
Back in the olden days
we ran races in the yard, played Red Rover with our friends,
and gardened with our dads.
We read stories from books, enjoyed board games at home,
and popped popcorn in a pan.
We wrote letters of thanks, knew our party line ring,
and watched movies from a reel.
Back in the olden days
we went swimming in the creek, fishing in a pond,
and camping in a tent.
Our horses were sticks, our pets often strays,
and concerts were in homes or at church.
Perhaps the conveniences
weren’t there,
but didn’t we have fun—
back in the olden days?
“Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past” (Deuteronomy 32:7 NIV).
Thanks, Diane. There were surely many wonderful things about those old days.
Thank you, Martin. There were, indeed.
