Once I sent my disciples on a sailing trip. Then I spent time in prayer with my Father.
In darkness—alone—they set sail, rowing until their backs ached. But circumstances were against them. The wind howled; Waves buffeted the boat. Finally I approached but came in an unusual way and they mistook me for a ghost—as something evil.
Too often when I come to you during difficulties, I am mistaken for an adversary or worse, the devil. They were terrified of me, and so …
I gave them my word of assurance. I told them it was me, Jesus, and to be brave. But Peter replied, “If…”
He doubted. He wasn’t convinced of my words. Are you? Do you believe my words?
Peter asked for a sign. “Tell me to come…”
Do you need a sign before you will believe me? Peter wanted a grand experience. Be careful what you wish for.
“Come!” I said.
He came. He walked on water. He received his sign and a glorious moment. But then he saw the size of his circumstances. He grew afraid. He sank.
No longer in the boat, his life was at risk. With such little faith, he would have been safer in the boat with the others.
“Lord save me!” he cried. Immediately I caught him. I catch those who cry out. Call on me in your time of trouble.
“You of little faith, why do you doubt?” Why do you place your faith in circumstances rather than me?
Once you resolve in your heart that I am always greater than the storms you face, you will walk with me in peace.
