Dig for the Treasure

There is treasure to be found

…if we are willing to dig for it.

As a child, I loved going on treasure and scavenger hunts. My Dad taught me to notice things–things that most people walk by. The tiny mushroom tucked between a root, or the flash of red in the crook of a branch that turned out to be a cardinal sitting on a nest, that flash of gold in a rock (fool’s gold).

Consequently, I collected things: bird feathers, rocks, bits of fuzzy green moss, and uniquely shaped sticks. When I became a member of the 4-H club, sewing became my thing and I collected fabric and buttons. Sadly, once my parents had passed I couldn’t be at the house when the attic was cleaned out and my brothers threw out my cigar boxes filled with my treasured rock collection. They mistakenly assumed I wouldn’t want them.

Back to the digging

Digging for treasure on the beachThere is still treasure to be found. For me – it is found on the beach and in God’s word.

Several scriptures speak of treasure in the Old and New Testaments of the bible.

Proverbs 25:2 (The Passion Translation) reads, “God conceals the revelation of his word in the hiding place of his glory. But the honor of kings is revealed by how they thoroughly search out the deeper meaning of all that God says.”

Proverbs 25 – 29 are considered the proverbs of King Solomon ( the wisest man on earth according to God) which were transmitted and edited by royal scribes during the reign of Hezekiah, king of Judah.

In I Peter 2:9-10, God calls us His treasure.

A reason to dig

found treasure

Isaiah 45:3 (NIV)  I will give you hidden treasures,
    riches stored in secret places,
so that you may know that I am the Lord,
the God of Israel, who summons you by name.

God has more for you and me

As the New Year begins, I pray you will search out all the treasure God has hidden for you! Go for the gold. It’s the best way to get to know Him.

  1. Your message brought back lots of good memories. Sometimes our treasures are found in the most ordinary and simple things. I too, had cigar boxes filled with treasures from nature. Thank you for this uplifting message, Diana.

  2. I love this reminder of seeking and finding the true treasure of God’s promises. While His word has life-changing power, and I believe His son Jesus is the greatest treasure I’ve ever found, I’d venture to say our heavenly Father encourages us to dig for treasure all around us, especially in nature. Some of my favs are sea glass, feathers, rocks, etc. Sometimes, I can’t resist sifting through those simple items and sharing threads of meaningful stories or hidden lessons with my grandchildren so they might learn to seek and find God’s abundant treasures too.
    Happy New Year Diana!
