With His Eye

Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. NKJV

The Eye is an Amazing Organ

  • The eye is the second most complex organ in the human body, second only to our brains.
  •  It consists of two million working parts.
  • 80% of all we learn in life comes through our eyes.
  • Human beings and dogs are the only creatures known to respond to visual prompts from another individual’s eyes. Dogs only do this when interacting with people.
  • A fingerprint has 40 distinct qualities, but an iris has 256. Because of this, retina scans are becoming more and more popular for security purposes.
  • Your eyes form two weeks after you are conceived.
  • The visual system is composed of two elements. These are the optical system (your eye) and the perpetual system (your brain). The brain computes the information your eye receives.

When I am near my wife and I look into her eyes, I can often discern how she is feeling. Sometimes she is playful, sometimes serious. At times, there is a sadness in her eyes. The eyes tell a story. The Bible says they are windows revealing the attitude of the soul. God our Heavenly Father also instructs us with His eye.

Through Gentle and Subtle Ways

When we by faith draw near to Him in adoration, we may not physically see His eyes peering back toward us, but we can sense His presence and discern His leading in our lives. The Bible says He guides us with His eye. This is a very subtle thing. God leads us, not through an audible voice, but instead, through gentle and subtle ways.

Pursue Intimacy with God

To fully receive His guidance, we need to pursue intimacy with our Lord. Our relationship with Him must be paramount. Seek Jesus first to worship Him, and second to receive from His hand. When we do it in that order, our priorities are right.

Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” NIV. Worship must always go first. Worship precedes ministry and worship should come before our prayerful petitions. In an attitude of worship, we are able to hear the Lord’s voice. It is here that He guides us with His eye.

Focus Your Eye on Him

The eye is what focuses on an object. The focus of God’s direction for our lives is found in Scripture. We must weigh every word that we hear in our prayer time with God’s written word. He will not speak contrary to the words of Scripture. But God wants us to pursue a prayer life that has the characteristic of a dialogue, not a monologue. Still, the primary way that God communicates with us is through our time in His word.

The Scripture tells us we are the apple of God’s eye (Zechariah 2:8). He gladly focuses on us. He sees the good in us that comes from Him, and He delights in His relationship with us.

God wants us to draw near to Him. He desires an intimate relationship with us. In that close place of fellowship, He gives us His cues – as if we were looking into His eyes. Through that close contact, we can discern where Jesus is leading us.

Spend Time with Him

I encourage you to set a time each day to spend with the Lord. Take time to worship, pray and read God’s word. Try not to be in a hurry. Come to the Lord with an open heart to receive all He has for you. He loves you, and He desires for your relationship with Him to flourish. Make your first priority to sit at His feet to worship Him. Develop a teachable heart as you read and meditate upon His word. Listen for His voice inside your spirit.

In John 10, Jesus said that His sheep know His voice and the voice of a stranger they will not follow. Make this your confession. Expect to hear from God every day. He wants to talk to you. Make it your habit to write down what you believe He is saying to you (See Habakkuk 2:1-3).  When God speaks to us, we will sense His peace. After taking time to write down what we believe He is saying, we should test it with scripture.

God desires to speak to us and to guide us. He usually does this in subtle ways as we pursue an intimate relationship with Him. Aren’t you glad that God has not left us like the orphan? He longs to have an intimate relationship with us. He desires to guide us with His eye.
