The Wall, officially known as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and smaller local versions profoundly impact visitors. During this Veterans Day month, may we never forget the price paid by those who died and those who returned home forever changed.
Silently they stand,
side by side,
hand to shoulder,
heads bowed,
and stare—
with broken bodies,
wounded minds
and searching souls—
at the names
of those who returned,
empty shells in flag-draped boxes.

And they weep,
one with rolling tears,
the other strangling
on the salt in his throat.
Finding their friend,
they remove their hats,
take one step back,
and salute.
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13 NIV).
