Friend, are you in the middle of a storm right now? If so, it’s vitally important to remember who God is.

My husband had a massive heart attack in November.  We spent 6 weeks in the hospital, mostly ICU, four hours away from home.

Although this was undoubtedly one of the darkest storms of our lives. We continued to trust in our God and remember who He is.

Because embracing what we know is true about God strengthens our heart, gives understanding and peace to our minds, and keeps us focused on God—especially smack dab in the middle of a storm.

And it’s not ‘if’ but ‘when’ we find ourselves in one of life’s storms. So let’s look at some truths about God that help us in the storms of life.

Remember Who God Is – In Control

(1.) Living. Our God is alive and well. Jeremiah compares man-made idols to the living God. “But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God.” Jeremiah 10:10 (ESV)

Mike had open heart surgery to place a permanent heart pump. During the entire time, we prayed and called out to God. We worship a living God who hears our pleas and prayers for healing and care.

(2.) God Does What He Says He Will Do. Look at Numbers 23:19, “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” (ESV)

During this storm of Mike’s heart failure, we rested in how God is always faithful to His promises. You see, God is the ultimate promise keeper.

(3.) In control. “For the Lord of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back?” Isaiah 14:27 (ESV)

We find such comfort knowing that no one or no-thing can thwart God’s plan for Mike. Even though we continue to pray for his complete recovery at home. Mike’s life ultimately rests in the One who created His heart and knew every beat it would ever take.

Remember Who God Is – Light

(4.) Almighty. “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” Revelation 1:8 (ESV)

How amazing to know the Almighty is fighting for us in a storm. He is with us in the beginning, middle, and end of the storm. He guides us through. We feel His power daily.

(5.) Light. “God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5b (ESV)

Lord, thank You for providing light in this storm. While the winds howl around us and the skies darken, You are the Light of the world, a beacon guiding us through to the other side of a storm.

God Is Able

(6.) Good. God is good and does good (Psalm 119:68). God cannot not be Good.

We know God’s goodness follows us all the days of our lives (Psalm 23), stormy days included. We always look back and see His footprints in our lives. God is still good in this storm. When life is not good, God is.

(7.) All-knowing. Omniscient. God knows the number of hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30), counts and names the stars (Psalm 147:4), and knows all things (1 John 3:20).

Thank you, Lord, for creating Mike and how intimate are Your ways and thoughts toward him. God, You know everything about Mike. You care about him as a loving Father tenderly cares for a son.

(8.) Able. God “is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” Ephesians 3:20 (ESV)

When Mike was a lead pastor, he once had our congregation commit Ephesians 3:20 (and verse 21) to memory. During this storm, I held onto this scripture with all my being. I even read it over Mike then prayed with him.

Our storm brought calmer days to days it raged out of control.  And even though this was one of the scariest storms of our lives, we know God is living, does what He says, is in control, the Almighty and our Light in the darkness. He is good, all-knowing, and able. Praise His Holy and Matchless Name!

There’s hope in the storm. It’s JESUS.

Jesus is the only sure hope we cling to in the darkness…in the storm.

  1. Praying for a full recovery and strength to the two of you as you go through this storm.

Also praying that for all of the people undergoing similar challenges who don’t have faith, that someone speaks to their heart about our Mighty God.

  2. Appreciate your prayers, Stephen. We pray our faith shines through in this storm and points others to the hope in Jesus Christ. My husband is doing well and recovering. God bless.
