In the Valley of the Shadow of Death… a prayer for all.
You, my Lord, are my shepherd; I shall not want. When there is lack, You turn water into wine. When hungry, You turn a few fish and loaves into a feast.
You cause me to stretch out and rest in pastures where grass abounds. In 100s and 50s, You separate the flock. As in the days of the Exodus when Moses organized Israel in groups of 1,000s, 100s, 50s, and 10s, You see every needy soul.
You guide me carefully to waters of rest. You speak a word, and wind and waves obey Your command. As Your Spirit hovered over the waters, You walk upon them, coming to me in times of need and fear.
You restore my soul. When poor in spirit, You take me into Your Kingdom. When filled with grief, You bring comfort. With a fresh word, You quicken my heart and I receive a vision of Your glory. You take what is broken, empty, and crushed and call it blessed. In You, I am blessed.
You guide me in righteousness. You make my paths straight. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. In all ways, at all times, You direct my steps. You order the steps of a good man and delight in his way. Whether I turn to the right or to the left, my ears hear Your voice behind me saying, “This is the way, walk in it.”
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will not fear evil, for You are with me. A light has dawned for those dwelling in the land of the shadow of death. You are the Light of the world that breaks forth.
Note of Encouragement: Capernaum, Jesus’ adult home and base of ministry, sat on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee — directly in the shadow of the Golan Heights, ancient Bashan, where enemy forces had swept down for centuries. This was the region Isaiah called “the land of the shadow of death” — Galilee of the Gentiles, despised and forgotten (Isaiah 9:1-2). Yet Isaiah had promised that one day, that a people walking in darkness would see a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light would dawn (Isaiah 9:2).
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given” (Isaiah 9:6). When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He withdrew to Galilee and made His home in Capernaum (Matthew 4:12-13) — fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah (Matthew 4:14-16). Not Jerusalem. Not His hometown of Nazareth. Jesus planted Himself in the valley where the deepest shadows fell — where raiders and Roman soldiers poured down from the heights to terrorize those far from Jerusalem and safety. This was the valley of the shadow of death, of darkness. Yet it was here that the true Light entered the world (John 1:9). It was here the Sea of Galilee became the mirror where heaven’s glory was reflected through one Man to the nations — drawing all men to Himself (John 12:32).
We know from 1 Peter 1:10-11 that the prophets searched intently and with great care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing. And here, 300 years after David writes this poem of encouragement, Isaiah picks up the threads of this prophecy and tells us who exactly the Shepherd will be. Daniel 9:24 gives the exact time the Messiah would arrive, but it is Isaiah who shows readers precisely where the Light of the world would dawn. Matthew, perhaps familiar with the area so well that even he, a Jewish tax collector, couldn’t misinterpret the events he witnessed, plants the start of Jesus’ ministry along the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Your arm reaches for me, pulling me close. You draw the weak to You. You rescue the lost. You guide the blind. When yoked with You, I lean on Your strength and stamina.
You arrange before me a table in the presence of my enemies. With sinners, You eat. With tax collectors, You feast. As a groom prepares a banquet for wedding guests, You invite me to share in Your joy. You clothe me in wedding garments.
You have anointed my head with oil — Your Holy Spirit. Pressed down, shaken together, running over — my cup of gladness and joy overflows. In You, with Your strength, I can do all things. Nothing is impossible with You.
Surely goodness and steadfast love are my legacy. All will call me blessed in the Lord. My children’s children will pursue Your ways all the days of their lives, for I, with them, will dwell in Your house now and forever.
