In A New Light

The un-neighborly dog

barked til three,

my dog, calm as a cow,

slept, one leg on,

one leg off the pillow.

The news was already bad by midnight,

dawn just made it harder to swallow.

God doesn’t strike me as a tip-toeing Father,

he graces every despot with resistance.

The commonsense of the sun,

the compassion of the wind,

will steal the thunder of hard blowing coal fire.

Cool water will yet have its day.

Eye for an eye technology

can’t see the forest shrinking,

eye to eye theology

blinks at the unsettling light.
