Hope in a Box

Hope in a Box-sad puppy looking out of a box

Why do we look for hope in a box?

Electronics, jewelry, clothes —

A smorgasbord of stuff —

Stuff to set out, put on, or stow away.

Hope in a Box-large walk-in closet filled with clothes, jewelry, drawers

Stuff that represents

Lasting love.

Good enough.

Better than.

Stuff that promises

Hope for the present.

Hope for the future.

Hope to replace the past.

Yet, all that hope fades —

Replaced by more boxes

Filled with more stuff

The latest trends.

Hope in a box-pile of discarded electronics

So, we throw away.

Give away.

Hide away.

Still longing.

Still looking.

Still searching for

Ever-elusive hope.

Hope we find

When we look beyond ourselves,

Beyond the box,

To the Creator of all

Who sent a Savior for all —

Our ever-present source for

All we need.

“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.” —2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
