The God of Second Chances

Last Sunday I asked the question on my real-writer’s blog–are nation’s given second chances after rejecting God? You can read that here (Let’s see if Alycia is paying attention and allows me that shameless plug). That’s a question we can debate until the second coming or the Lions win the Super Bowl, whichever comes first.

What is not debatable is God’s allowance for second chances among individuals. You and me. The guy in the next cube. Yes, even the rude cashier who always seems to be in your checkout line. If God were not the God of second chances, my friends, I would not bother writing for this here blog.

What I find interesting is that we seem to place limits on God’s grace. There is a measurable level of sin that He simply cannot sustain upon the cross. “Whoah!” we imagine Him saying. “You did that? Too much for me!”

Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? But I see it all the time. Especially Christians believe that we sometimes backslide too far for recovery. We’ve broken the tether that links us to our Creator. Like history’s most unfortunate astronaut in Gravity, all we can do is wait until we plummet to our doom, God shrugging from the distance as if He did all He could.

I say again, if God were not the God of second, third, fourth, and 490th chances, none of us need bother to read on. Go on and check out the latest Lady Gaga video and live it up. For tomorrow we die.

Fortunately, you are spared not only from Lady Gaga, you are spared the fate that we all deserve. This is, by no means, permission to partake in Our Daily Sin because God will forgive you. Jesus detested a hypocrite over all others. While it is shameful to commit a sin with one hand while the other clings to grace, it is a tragedy to believe that the tether has been cut by the One who so desperately wants you to spend eternity with Him. That is the Big Lie. It is satan’s favorite weapon. It is not the sin that will destroy you, it is your surrendering to the Lie that will do you in.

We are commanded to have faith. So have faith. Especially when you fail. Cling to the tether with all your strength. You can cut it any time you wish, but know that God never will.

I am a husband, dad, Christian, and writer. Not necessarily in that order. It took me thirty years to turn my life over to my Redeemer. It's taken another ten to figure out what it is He has in store for me. My first novel, Now I Knew You, will be released in March, 2015. I pray that God will allow me to write many more before calling me home.
