Devotion

Loves devotion - gnarled hands

We frequently find devotion in the smallest of acts.

Gnarled and gray

he hovers near her bed,

spreads the cover

over her bird-thin shoulders,

then plants a final kiss on her cheek.

minutes before the church bell Minutes before the bell,

he slips the brown paper bag

filled with treasures in his pocket,

rests the worn felt hat on his head,

and walks to the church next door.

the church next door Inside the white weatherboards,

he hangs his hat on a nail

and a smile on his face

as he joins in praise and devotion

to the Giver of all things good.

sweet treatsOn the graveled lot

with pocket emptied,

he sneaks the brown bag’s riches

to the children who wait,

sweet teeth soon satisfied.

Devotion--old man's hand on top of old woman's handOnce more inside his four-room castle,

he lays his hat aside,

hovers near the love of his life,

adjusts the cover over her bird-thin shoulders,

and plants a kiss of greeting on her cheek.

“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves” (Romans 12:10 NIV).
